Everest Base Camp Preparation
Physical Training
Everest Base Camp trek is not recommended for beginner trekker. Although you are a intermediate trekker, physical training plays great role for the successful completion of the trek. This trek is physically demanding. You need to hike for 6 to 7 hours each day. Additionally, you need to climb steep uphill when you ascent to higher altitude. As we know, there is low oxygen level available in the higher altitude, you must perform cardio activities like cycling, running, stair climbing and hiking. We suggest you to perform cardio activities 5 days per week. If you do cycling one day then next day you can do running and stair climbing. At least once a week go for hiking which will strengthen your legs. These cardio activities you must perform 3 months before your trek starts.
Gear and Packing
Always invest in right gears to protect yourself from the cold temperature of the Everest Region. Ajit Adhikari (owner and lead trekking guide of Nepal Trekscape) suggest to buy high-quality trekking boots to support your ankle. He suggest to buy windproof down jacket to protect you from wind, thermal wear to make your body warm, windproof gloves. Also carry layered clothing to adjust the changing temperature during trek. You must buy backpack, trekking poles to support your legs when you have to climb uphill. Additionally, carry water bottle to keep your self hydrated during your trek. For overnight stay at teahouse, you can rent or buy sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures upto negative 15 degree celsius. Ensure your gears are high quality, lightweight and durable.
Acclimatization and Health
Acclimatization is the most important factor which plays great role for the successful completion of the Everest Base Camp Trek. Ajit Adhikari says “acclimatization is more important than physical fitness to prevent altitude sickness” from his experience. During Everest Base Camp Trek there are two acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)and Dingboche (4,410 m) in our itinerary. These two acclimatization days helps you to adjust your body in the environment of the higher altitude.
On the acclimatization day at Namche bazaar we hike to reach Everest View Hotel located in Syangboche ridge. Then again descent to Namche Bazaar’s teahouse to stay overnight. Similarly, on the acclimatization day at Dingboche, we hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083m). Then again descent to Dingboche’s teahouse to stay overnight. During hike, we drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and walk in the slow pace. Hence, both of these acclimatization days follows the principle of “Climb High, Sleep Low”. It ultimately helps our body to adapt low oxygen level.
